Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

What is it?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder which can be triggered when a person is exposed to one or more traumatic events. Examples include involvement in a serious car accident or the victim of an assault. PTSD can have a serious impact on overall and workplace wellbeing so treatment is highly recommended.

If you are involved in, or witness to, a traumatic event it is common to experience upsetting, distressing or confusing feelings afterwards. This is perfectly understandable and most people find that these symptoms disappear in a relatively short period of time. Symptoms may include disturbing recurring flashbacks, avoidance or numbing of memories of the event and hyperarousal (high levels of anxiety). If these symptoms persist for longer than a month, or are very extreme, you may be given a diagnosis of PTSD. Below we have provided information which details how our services can help to improve the workplace wellbeing of anyone experiencing this condition.

How can KMA help?

Assessment

KMA’s PTSD assessment looks at how symptoms impact your life and work, preventing you from living as you’d like. This includes your workplace, home and leisure activities.

Our Occupational Therapist assesses you strengths and challenges through sensitive conversations and relevant tools. We focus on improving your daily functioning, including roles like parenting or employment, to set achieveable goals and enhance your quality of life.

Reports

KMA will produce a detailed yet accessible report of your assessment. This will provide a summary of the barriers that are getting in the way of fulfilling your roles and routines as you wish and make a number of recommendations to help.

We aim to get the report back to you within 10 working days of the assessment.

Intervention

If you suspect you have PTSD, seek guidance from your GP for medication and therapy options. KMA offers occupational therapy to aid in your recovery.

Our experienced Occupational Therapists provide evidence-based, individualised treatment plans focused on enhancing functional performance. We take a person-centred, strengths-based approach to help you achieve your goals and improve functioning.

Your occupational therapist will work with you to understand the triggers, barriers and established strategies you currently use. They will also help you to learn and put into practice techniques that help control your symptoms whilst allowing you to focus on your roles and routines. These may include:

  • Behavioural activation
  • Personal goal setting
  • Graded return to work/other life roles

  • Anxiety management techniques

  • Relaxation

  • Mindfulness

  • Establishing a Wellness Recovery Plan
