KMA: University Transition Services

University. It is a big deal, for both the parent and the child.

For some, it is a lifelong goal, and for others a last-minute decision. As parents, our children going to University can be a daunting time. It is a whole new adjustment, and it can cause anxiety for both parties.

We constantly see the university experience depicted in the media, often portrayed as ‘the best time of your life’ but that is not always how it goes…

But what happens if my child does not enjoy university?

For some, the University experience is not what they expected. Perhaps the lifestyle change is extremely overwhelming. It could be that;

  •       your child has not made friends and is feeling socially isolated
  •       they are so busy socialising that their grades are slipping
  •       they are finding the transition to living independently for the first time challenging
  •       they are having difficulty balancing the demands of study, socialising and looking after themselves
  •       they are finding the demands of higher education more demanding than they anticipated
  •       they are questioning the choices they have made
  •       they have begun to doubt themselves and are losing confidence
  •       coronavirus has affected their entire experience and they are thinking maybe this is not for me…

Dropping out of university is a big decision, and your child may feel compelled by external or internal pressures, such as those listed above, to make this choice.

If any of the above sounds familiar to your child’s situation. We can help!

As a parent, it can be extremely challenging to support a child at University. It is difficult to know what might be happening, what they are thinking or feeling and whether they are able to problem-solve their way out of the difficulties they encounter. The conflict between wanting to help and support them, whilst enabling them to build their own independence, resourcefulness and resilience can be huge.

But what if there was a service available, that helped your child to overcome barriers and utilise their own resources, which was conducted remotely and entirely confidentially?

Well, welcome to KMA’s transition support service!

Let us explain a bit more about what we do:

We recognised that the challenges students face when moving away to University are completely unique, even more so in the current climate. So here at KMA, we offer an independent support service to university students who are:

  • Finding the work/life balance difficult
  • Feeling anxious and low in mood
  • Not meeting academic expectations
  • Developing unhealthy coping strategies
  • Unable to meet deadlines due to ineffective time management skills.

At KMA, we offer personalised, individual, and wholly bespoke student services.

We understand that the vast complexity and specific needs of students requires a completely unique approach to achieve success.

But who are we?

Our service is provided by experienced Occupational Therapists who are dual-trained in both mental and physical health.

How does a referral work?

Once the initial enquiry has been made either, a virtual assessment will be scheduled. Following an assessment, our Occupational Therapists will provide immediate recommendations, and then if required develop a bespoke support and intervention programme formulated to meet all the wellbeing needs of the student. Our programmes will consist of regular remote support and communication through a variety of forums. For example telephone, Skype,, Zoom, Facetime and SMS messaging. The level of support required will be discussed and agreed following the initial assessment.

But do not just take our word for it, have a look at a client testimonial:

Testimonials:

“I was really looking forward to starting University, but the reality was quite different. I found leaving home and having to juggle looking after myself, trying to keep up with my coursework and make new friends difficult.

KMA were extremely flexible and assisted me to identify primary issues that needed to be different and helped me organise myself and develop different ways of doing things. I am now in the second year of my degree feeling much better equipped and more resilient to complete my course because of the fantastic help and support I received from KMA.”
