The Qualities of an Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapy is a science-based degree in the healthcare sector. An Occupational Therapist will undergo 3 years of undergraduate study which includes, coursework, practical exams and placements within healthcare settings such as hospitals and within the community.

Having worked for a private occupational therapy consultancy for over 3 years now, I’ve learned a lot about the job, the people who do it and the entire process, from enquiry to discharging a client.  I was recently asked what qualities I think an Occupational Therapist should have, so here is my answer.

Did you read our previous blog about men’s mental health? Find it here.

Occupational therapy is firstly about communication. The Occupational Therapist must communicate with the client and relevant parties, such as the case manager, employer, solicitor and/or family members. They must engage the client and make them feel comfortable enough to share their situation. Furthermore, it’s important that they are good listeners and can show empathy. They must also respect client confidentiality and only communicate with those who the client has given their consent to.

Occupational Therapists are the only profession to be dual-trained in both mental and physical health, this means they are able to factor all aspects of a client’s life into the therapy. It is imperative that Occupational Therapists are pragmatic and an ‘out of the box’ thinker. They must be able to come up with new solutions to achieve their client’s goals in a sustainable manner. This could include changing their daily routine, recommending and implementing new and efficient ways of working or suggesting adaptations and/or equipment to help the client complete daily tasks.

Occupational therapy is a highly rewarding profession, which helps people to achieve what they want and need to do regardless of the barriers they are experiencing.

Here at KMA, we are an independent nationwide consultancy working with private referrals, case managers, solicitors, or employers to provide a high standard of practice focusing on client-centred rehabilitation with cost-effective results.
