Early Intervention and the Role of a Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant
Mental health issues often leave employers in a state of profound uncertainty. Unlike a broken leg or contracting flu, it is often difficult for others to understand what the individual is going through and what may or may not assist. Other health conditions can present their own issues if not handled correctly.
In this blog post, we will be discussing early intervention following employee absenteeism due to mental ill health or other periods of sickness absence. We will also be looking at the role of a vocational rehabilitation consultant in a successful return to work.

What is SAD?

We have made it through another January, and I’m sure many of us have welcomed February with open arms.
January gets a bad name, doesn’t it? The weather is cold and grey and there doesn’t seem like anything to look forward to yet. Although this communal feeling of ‘sadness’ could be related to SAD (seasonable Affective Disorder) whereby the symptoms of depression are much more present in the winter months. It is estimated that 3 in 100 people experience SAD in the UK every year. With men making up a high percentage of that number. The exact cause is […]
The Science Behind Hydration

Hydration is defined as replenishing a lack of water in the body and according to the NHS website, they recommend we drink 6-8 cups of water a day (roughly about 2 litres of water a day).

So what is the science behind being hydrated?
Drinking water is good for you, we all know that. But what does it ACTUALLY do to the body and mind?
The human body is roughly 60% water. The brain and kidney possess the most water percentage, with the bones and teeth containing the least. Hydration […]
Welcome 2022

We hope you were able to enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones. Although this time of year can be tricky for some, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the past 12 months, and well what a year we have all had.
Hopefully, the new year brings with it new goals, aspirations, motivations and although it is inevitable that there will also be new challenges let’s hope these will be manageable.
Last year as we welcomed 2021, we wrote a blog about why we think setting new years resolutions can be unhealthy, as these often […]
Achievable – Attainable Goals
In this blog post, we will be discussing what achievable goals are, why they are important and how you can create them for yourself.
In occupational therapy, we use this goal-setting strategy with clients, to reach milestones in their therapy, but let’s go back to the basics. Occupational therapy is the process in which we help clients to achieve what they want to achieve, regardless of barriers and diagnosis. We work in a client-centred way, where they are the facilitators of their own success but equipped with tools and strategies to overcome challenges sustainably.
Have you […]
The Benefits of Occupational Therapy
We often write about occupational therapy in terms of what it is and what is the process. But what are the benefits of it? Kate, Shelley and the KMA team have a highly successful track record with their clients where they have gone to achieve amazing things. So in this blog we’ll be explaining a bit about the benefits of occupational therapy.
When we see clients, our goal is to discharge them. We often make a joke that we are like Nanny McPhee. ‘When you want us but no longer need us we must go.’ The goal of occupational […]
Burnout – Let’s Talk About It
What is Burnout?
In 2019 ‘burnout’ was recognised by the WHO (World Health Organisation) as an occupational phenomenon. Burnout is a state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion that is usually caused by exposure to excessive stress. This could be down to events in someone’s personal life, environmental factors or even work-related stress. Burnout can lead to breakdowns and can be extremely detrimental to one’s wellbeing. During the COVID-19 pandemic reports of burnout rocketed – with more pressure on the UK force than ever before. The lines between home and personal […]
The Importance of Sleep on Health
How often would you say you get a good night sleep? Although the definition of ‘good night’ will vary from person to person, it can loosely be defined as at least 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep where you wake feeling refreshed and revitalised. Albeit this is easier said than done, a good sleep schedule is imperative to our mental and physical wellbeing.
In this blog, we will be exploring sleep and its benefits on our well-being and share some expert tips along the way.
Let’s start with what happens when you sleep…according to the […]
The Qualities of an Occupational Therapist
Occupational therapy is a science-based degree in the healthcare sector. An Occupational Therapist will undergo 3 years of undergraduate study which includes, coursework, practical exams and placements within healthcare settings such as hospitals and within the community.
Having worked for a private occupational therapy consultancy for over 3 years now, I’ve learned a lot about the job, the people who do it and the entire process, from enquiry to discharging a client. I was recently asked what qualities I think an Occupational Therapist should have, so here is my answer.
